Incontinence
The involuntary leakage of urine can be a bothersome and often embarrassing condition. When you have incontinence, actions like coughing, sneezing, laughing or lifting can put pressure on the bladder and cause it to unexpectedly leak.
Types of incontinence can include:
- Stress - caused by coughing, sneezing, lifting or physical movement
- Urge - associated with an overwhelming urge to use the bathroom
- Overflow - when the bladder doesn’t empty properly or urine spills over
- Mixed - more than one type of incontinence at the same time
Aging, certain medical conditions, infections, medications, obesity, pregnancy and childbirth all contribute to urinary incontinence. Often, incontinence can be greatly improved or even eliminated with proper treatment. Santa Rosa Medical Center offers both surgical and non-surgical methods for treating urinary incontinence and minimizing discomfort.
