Lactation Services
Breastfeeding is considered by many to be the ideal way to provide nourishment to newborns. However, some mothers encounter problems or need assistance after leaving the hospital.
At Santa Rosa Medical Center, we are committed to helping you meet your goals for feeding your infant. The staff, certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and The Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice, offers information and instruction from prenatal education to weaning.
Services include:
- Breastfeeding consultations
- Prenatal education
- Inpatient rounding
Lactation consultations are prescribed by your pediatrician and begin 3-5 days after discharge from the hospital. Lactation consultants will call to schedule your consultation and give you an overview of what to expect. The consult usually includes weighing the baby before and after feeding, maternal breast assessment and infant oral assessment. The lactation consultants will also answer any breastfeeding questions you may have.
Lactation consultants can also provide advice and support at any stage to answer breastfeeding questions and issues that might arise throughout the time you breastfeed. We can meet with you to assess your situation to get you back on track and help prevent complications.
